This is based on the work of Peggy Pascoe, written by Barbara Young Welke. The main points are the following, but the whole article is worth reading:

1. Begin by recognizing what the author has accomplished
2. Be honest
3. Be concrete and constructive
4. Highlight errors without judging
5. Offer advice with humility
6. Remember we were all novices in our field once upon a time
7. Don’t take over
8. Be attentive to stage of career issues
9. Be attentive to questions of audience
10. Be gracious
